Film Screening of "Diet of Souls" by John Houston
Film Screening: Tuesday, April 15, 2014 12:00pm - 12:50pm in the Ostermayer Room, SCC
Diet of Souls examines the spiritual relationship between Inuit and the animals on whom they depend for survival. In the ancient religion of Inuit, birds and beasts have souls, just as humans, and are equally worthy of respect. Despite a century of Christianity, many Inuit still hold fast to this belief. How can animals be both spiritual equals and one's daily bread? What does it mean to kill and eat creatures who possess souls?
Houston uses childhood memories as a prism through which to see the history of the times and the fascinating and complex development of Inuit Art over the last half century.
