Student Clubs and Organizations

Penn State Greater Allegheny offers nearly twenty student clubs and organizations. Participation in these activities provides great opportunities for students to gain leadership skills by interacting with other students, holding leadership positions, and participating in community service. Penn State Greater Allegheny students are always welcome to petition for new clubs and organizations by contacting the Office of Student Activities. Below is a listing of current Penn State Greater Allegheny's clubs and organizations:

Absence: The campus literary magazine is published annually during the spring semester. The magazine is edited and produced by a student/faculty editorial staff. Submissions of poetry, short fiction, essays, photography, and graphic art are welcome throughout the academic year.

Black Student Union: An organization that promotes awareness of African-American culture and heritage. BSU advocates for the needs of PSUGA’s black students and actively programs cultural and social events for the entire campus community. BSU organizes field trips, stages an annual Kwanzaa celebration, and observes Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Black History Month in February with a variety of activities.

Collegian: Our own student newspaper. The Collegian is open to all writers and journalists. The newspaper is associated with a practicum course offered each semester. The Collegian office is located in the SCC. Read the Collegian online.

Drama Club:  The Drama Club is always looking for actors, set and costume designers, technicians, and crewmembers. A fall children's play is produced for area elementary schools and a spring adult drama is produced and staged here on campus.

Intramurals and Athletics: The athletic department organizes an array of seasonal intramural sports including touch football, basketball, volleyball, and softball.

Lion Ambassadors: This student group is offered as a one-credit course and accepts exceptional students who have demonstrated academic success and who have participated in student activities. The Lion Ambassadors serve as tour guides, assist the Admissions Office during campus open houses, and are involved in community service work for charities in the McKeesport area. One lucky lion wears the Nittany Lion mascot suit at sporting events and other PSUGA functions.

Psychology Club: This club's formal name is the Psychological Association of Penn State Greater Allegheny. It has become an active force in establishing community relationships and serving local agencies with their volunteer efforts.

Residence Hall Council: Advocates for the residential student's needs and provides a number of social, educational and cultural activities including field trips to area theaters, movie houses, museums, and parks. The Residence Hall Council also organizes group visits to the community.

Seek Ask Find Expect (S.A.F.E): A non-denominational campus group which meets on a weekly basis for prayer and discussion. The Christian Fellowship also sponsors social events, on- and off-campus.

Student Government Association (SGA): Your elected body of representatives includes executive officers, freshman representatives, and two appointed representatives from each campus club and organization. SGA meets twice a month during the academic calendar. SGA provides funding for each of the campus groups and supports all Penn State Greater Allegheny student groups, while advocating for all individual students. SGA is active in promoting regional events between all of the Western Pennsylvania Penn State campuses (including trips to Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball games, a Volleyball Marathon, THON, and other events.) SGA is an active member of the statewide Commonwealth Campuses Student Government (CCSG) association.

THON: The Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (THON), is the largest student-run philanthropy in the world.  THON is a year-round fundraising event benefiting The Four Diamonds Fund, Conquering Childhood Cancer, at the Penn State Children's Hospital in Hershey, PA.  The year culminates in a no-sitting, no-sleeping, two-day dance marathon held every February.  Over the past 35 years, the students of THON have raised more than $46 million and have helped thousands of children and families fight pediatric cancer.  The THON committee at PSUGA "cans" around the local area; hosts the annual "Volley for a Cure", "Battle of the Bands", and other fun activities. WMKP Radio: A student-run campus radio station. Its broadcast range is limited to the campus, yet it provides music, sports, and information to the whole campus community.
